The new Petrivision series CONSTRUCTION SITES takes elemental components of a building as a starting point for questions about people and society. After the opening "Foundation," the focus now shifts to the wall. Walls support and protect, they shape a space and create an interior. At the same time, they separate, block paths, and keep people out. Which walls do we need? Which ones must fall?
The German-German border is history, the Berlin Wall fell almost four decades ago. But what has become of the borders it marked? And what about the often-invoked "walls in the minds"? Dr. Andreas Wagner, head of the Grenzhus Schlagsdorf, which deals with the history of the German division and its consequences at the former inner-German border strip, speaks about this.
Prof. Frank Schwartze, an urban planner at the Technical University of Lübeck, offers a different perspective on walls. For walls are not only political symbols: They structure our cities, create spaces, separate private from public, and influence how people meet.
Elisabeth Hartmann-Runge, pastor and refugee commissioner of the Lübeck-Lauenburg church district, asks when a wall becomes a protective space. Using the example of church asylum, she tells of church doors that close so that people behind them can be safe—and of the conflict that arises when protection, law, and conscience do not demand the same.
Texts by Georges Perec, Zoë Skoulding, and others are read by Rebecca Indermaur and Sigrid Dettlof. The Valentin Vocal Ensemble sings works by Knut Nystedt, Hugo Distler, and others. Grigorii Osipov improvises on percussion. Additionally, the duo Ellangton with Ella Burkhardt (vocals and guitar) and Christopher Langkau (guitar) will perform. Besides text and music, the church space itself is also highlighted, with projections from Dr. Holger Reimers' architectural history documentation of St. Petri and a mural action by Daniel Ivanov.
