Giacomo Puccini: Mass of Glory

Joy of Life Instead of Holy Liturgy: Puccini's Messa di Gloria

With a high enjoyment of Italian late Romanticism, the Kunst am Kai music festival kicks off its 13th season: for the first time in the St. Petri Cultural Church, the series of Great Choral Concerts will continue with several choirs, soloists, and orchestra. At the center of the evening is the impressive "Messa di Gloria" by Giacomo Puccini. Before Puccini conquered the opera stages of the world, the young composer wrote this work, which already reveals much of his later genius. With lyrical melodies, colorful orchestration, and classical-romantic thematic development, the work remains one of the most popular choral pieces and, with its dramatic sound language, approaches the realm of opera.

Under the direction of Gabriele Pott, the program is expanded with works by Puccini's contemporaries. The festival's initiator adds personal touches with some of her favorite pieces, including the Summchor from "Madame Butterfly," the Intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rusticana," and the aria "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana" from Catalani's opera "La Wally," featuring a reunion with soprano Natalia Willot. Finally, Noah Schaul will perform "Nessun Dorma" from the opera "Turandot," one of the defining tenor arias in the opera repertoire.
